‘BIBLE PASSAGES: Read online
1 Chronicles – Chapter 29, verses 10-18
Psalm 24 – verse 1
Matthew – Chapter 26, verses 6-13

Have you ever been trusted to look after something that wasn’t yours? How did you act? If you ask any best-man at a wedding, one of the most nerve-wracking jobs is to look after the wedding rings! They’re not yours, you’ve got one job – to look after them for the purpose of the owner. You get it wrong, everything goes pear-shaped! But, get it right and joy abounds…

That’s what it means to be a steward. When it comes to being generous, it starts with recognising that we are stewards. Everything we have comes from God, and is to be used for God. Recognising this is an immensely freeing thing – as it sets us free to not worry about whether we have enough, and how we should use what God has given us.

Each week there are TWO different sets of questions for you to use, whether you are exploring the Bible within your Life Group, in other group settings, or simply using them on your own.

These are simple questions to provoke discussion together out of the talk (ideal if you are watching our Sunday Service online with others in your group):

1 | Was there anything that particularly helped you during the talk?

2 | Was there anything that you didn’t necessarily agree with, or found difficult to understand in the talk?

3 | As a result of the talk, what:

3a. Changes do you want to see?

3b. Truths do you need to remember?

3c. Actions do you need to take?

These are questions that are based on the talk and the surrounding themes:

1 Chronicles – Chapter 29, verses 10-18
Psalm 24 – verse 1
Matthew – Chapter 26, verses 6-13

1 | On Sunday, Tim highlighted the difference between being an ‘owner’ of something versus being a ‘steward’ of something. What would you say is the main difference?

2 | Read 1 Chronicles 29:10-18. King David lets out a real cry of praise in this passage. When it comes to generosity, what do you notice about God and his people in this passage?

3 | How easy do you find it to acknowledge that ‘everything in heaven and earth is yours’ (v11)? Why might we find it difficult to say this, particularly when it comes to ‘wealth and honour’ (v12)?

4 | How might the attitude expressed in v14 completely change our attitude to generosity?

5 | During his talk, Tim quoted from Teresa Morgan from Oxford University, ‘Christians are taught that God loves them absolutely, and that on that basis they can trust in God, they can love God, and, because they are given such an abundance…they can afford to love one another with enormous, unreserved generosity.’ Why should Christians be known for their generosity?

6 | Read v15-16 and Philippians 3:20-21. What is the relationship between knowing where our ‘home’ is and our generosity? How does living as a citizen of heaven impact your own attitude to giving and generosity?

7 | In v17-18, King David hints that generosity is simply an act of integrity. What do you think about this?

8 | How would your life change if you thought of yourself as a ‘steward’ more?

9 | Take some time to pray, asking that God would change your heart towards being a steward.

As you explore these questions pray for one another to deepen and develop your relationship with Jesus.

Christian Generosity according to 2 Corinthians 8–9’ by Viateur Habarurema

Money Counts’ by Graham Beynon

Some of us want to escape money. Some of us want to embrace money. We fear money, and we desire it. We think about it every day, and yet often we try not to think about it. Graham Beynon shows us how to control our money rather than our money controlling us. In this readable, realistic book, he takes us to the gospel to show how we can handle money well in our hearts, so we can handle it confidently and wisely with our hands.
