The Issue With Submission | Session 8

BY: John Auger
DATE: Sunday 12 March 2023

BIBLE PASSAGES: Read online
James | Chapter 4 | Verses 1-13

EXCERPT:

How is submission to God a good thing? A recent article in Christianity Today explored the negativity that surrounds the word submission. Many people associating it with control, abuse of power, inequality and a lack of freedom. However, James teaches that as we submit ourselves to God he will lift us up, giving us a greater and closer relationship with him rather than pushing us away.

  Bible Study Questions

Each week there are TWO different sets of questions for you to use, whether you are exploring the Bible within your Life Group, in other group settings, or simply using them on your own.

A | DISCUSSION STARTERS
These are simple questions to provoke discussion together out of the talk (ideal if you are watching our Sunday Service online with others in your group):

1 | Was there anything that particularly helped you during the talk?

2 | Was there anything that you didn’t necessarily agree with, or found difficult to understand in the talk?

3 | As a result of the talk, what:

a. Changes do you want to see?

b. Truths do you need to remember?

c. Actions do you need to take?

B | QUESTIONS TO EXPLORE
These are questions that are based on the talk and the surrounding themes:

Read James Chapter 4, verses 1-13

1 | Were there any points that stood out for you from the talk on Sunday? Was there anything you particularly agreed or disagreed with?

2 | In what way could Chapter 4, verses 7-10 be described as the central paragraph of the letter?

3 | Based on this passage, what place does grace have in James’ thinking?

4 | Read verse 7. How have you seen the spiritual discipline of submission abused?

5 | Why was the teaching of Jesus on submission so revolutionary? In what ways can you follow
the teaching James gives to ‘submit yourselves to God’?

6 | Pray for the areas you have each shared, that you would see God at work. Also time some time to reflect and feedback on the things that have most stood out for you or impacted you through the teachings of James in this series so far.

As you work thorugh these questions pray for one another to deepen and develop your relationship with Jesus in this year ahead.
