James | Chapter 1 | Verses 19-27

How does the Bible impact your everyday life? In the Christian series we looked at the trust we can have that the Bible is true but how can engaging with the Bible in your everyday life make a difference to how you live? In the midst of busy lives how can we fully engage with the Bible and help point others towards the difference that the Bible can make in their own lives?

  Bible Study Questions

Each week there are TWO different sets of questions for you to use, whether you are exploring the Bible within your Life Group, in other group settings, or simply using them on your own.

These are simple questions to provoke discussion together out of the talk (ideal if you are watching our Sunday Service online with others in your group):

1 | Was there anything that particularly helped you during the talk?

2 | Was there anything that you didn’t necessarily agree with, or found difficult to understand in the talk?

3 | As a result of the talk, what:

a. Changes do you want to see?

b. Truths do you need to remember?

c. Actions do you need to take?

These are questions that are based on the talk and the surrounding themes:

Read James Chapter 1, verses 19-27:

1 | Were there any points that stood out for you from the talk on Sunday? Was there anything you particularly agreed or disagreed with?

2 | James says we shouldn’t merely listen to the word but instead we should also do what it says. How well do you feel you are doing this in your life? What has either helped or hindered you to both listen to God’s word and do what it says?

3 | James puts ‘doing the word’ into 3 categories; controlling the tongue, compassion for the marginalised and avoiding worldliness. Out of these 3 which do you find the most challenging in you life and why?

4 | In verse 25 we read that if we learn and live by God’s word we will be blessed by it. What are some inner-to-outer transformations you have seen God make in your life since you started following Jesus?

5 | In the context James was writing an orphan was not someone who was parent-less but someone who was either motherless or fatherless. It is an old Christian tradition that Jesus lost his earthly father Joseph, meaning his siblings (as James was) were orphans and his mother a widow. He knew personally the importance of looking after marginalised people groups. Thinking of someone you know who may feel marginalised or vulnerable what could you do this week to ‘do the word’ for them?

6 | Take some time to pray for one another, particularly that you can engage with the Bible in new and life changing ways this week.

As you work thorugh these questions pray for one another to deepen and develop your relationship with Jesus in this year ahead.
