Luke Chapter 24, verses 28-35
Psalm 96

So what? It’s perhaps the most important question to end this teaching series on. After all is said and done, what do we do with all we have explored? What if, in light of Jesus, the rest of our lives can be the most meaningful and important yet. What does it look like to make the most of the rest of your life?

Bible Study Questions

Each week there are TWO different sets of questions for you to use, whether you are exploring the Bible within your Life Group, in other group settings, or simply using them on your own.

These are simple questions to provoke discussion together out of the talk (ideal if you are watching our Sunday Service online with others in your group):

1 | Was there anything that particularly helped you during the talk?

2 | Was there anything that you didn’t necessarily agree with, or found difficult to understand in the talk?

3 | As a result of the talk, what:

a. Changes do you want to see?

b. Truths do you need to remember?

c. Actions do you need to take?

These are questions that are based on the talk and the surrounding themes:

1At the start of her talk, Judy mentioned two questions that are good to ask:

a) Does it work?
b) Is it True?

How would you answer those two questions, with regard to Christianity?

2Read Luke 24:13-35. As you think about this encounter, what strikes you about it? What emotions would you have been feeling before seeing who Jesus is, and afterwards?

3Verse 21 highlights the the intensity of the scene – they mention that “…we had hoped that he was the one…”. Faced with what they saw over the previous few days, they began to doubt that God was at work. And yet, the reality couldn’t be further from the truth. God was actually at work in much more amazing ways! How is the reality of what Jesus did even greater than they would have imagined? What might this have to say to us today, when we doubt whether God is at work?

4Verse 25-27 is the centrepiece, as Jesus reveals the storyline of the whole of the scriptures. How does this change how you read the entire bible? Who is the bible about? Think about some of the famous accounts of the Old Testament, how might this ‘Jesus lens’ change how you read them?

5In what ways were these two disciples influenced by the voices around them (v19-24)? How are we similarly influenced? What might be the warning here?

6Judy referred to the actor Matthew Perry, in which he remembers a moment in his hotel room after he had been battling with addiction, and with God: ‘I had been in the presence of God. I was certain of it. And this time I had prayed for the right thing: help….I stayed sober for two years based solely on that moment. God had shown me a sliver of what life could be. He had saved me that day, and for all days, no matter what. He had turned me into a seeker, not only of sobriety, and truth, but also of him.’ In a sense, his personal encounter with God ‘worked’ and he realised true it was. Just like those disciples on the road to Emmaus in Luke 24. What does it mean to have your ‘eyes opened’ and ‘recognise’ who Jesus is? How might that impact your life this week?

7Take some time to pray. Pray for some people you know who need to know the truth of Jesus’ death and resurrection, and that you might be able to similarly share the hope with them this week (v33-35).

VIDEO | Each week we will share a video from the Alpha Film Series (see below). We encourage you to watch this when you meet with your Group; or during your own personal Bible Study time.

CHAPTER | ‘How can I live my best life now’ by Rebecca Mclaughlin

QUOTE | “We are all believers already. We do not need to take a “leap of faith”. Our culture has already taken an almighty leap. What we really need is some ground beneath our feet….the encouragement is not to “leap”; it’s to find your feet. Jesus Christ has proved himself to be a foundation for billions. He is solid rock on which to stand.” (Glen Scrivener)
