James | Chapter 1 | Verses 1-18

How do you face temptation & show perseverance? Every week we seem to be reading a news scandal of yet another celebrity affair or celebrity evading tax payments but even in our own lives we face daily temptations both big and small. God promises that when we persevere and don’t give in to temptation we will receive ‘the crown of life’. How can knowing God in our lives help us to stand firm against temptation and help us know the assurance of his forgiveness when we do get things wrong?

  Bible Study Questions

Each week there are TWO different sets of questions for you to use, whether you are exploring the Bible within your Life Group, in other group settings, or simply using them on your own.

These are simple questions to provoke discussion together out of the talk (ideal if you are watching our Sunday Service online with others in your group):

1 | Was there anything that particularly helped you during the talk?

2 | Was there anything that you didn’t necessarily agree with, or found difficult to understand in the talk?

3 | As a result of the talk, what:

a. Changes do you want to see?

b. Truths do you need to remember?

c. Actions do you need to take?

These are questions that are based on the talk and the surrounding themes:

Read James Chapter 1, verses 1-18:

1 | Were there any points that stood out for you from the talk on Sunday? Was there anything you particularly agreed or disagreed with?

2 | James writes an oft-quoted verse in James 1:2; ‘Consider it pure joy….whenever you face trials of many kinds.’ As we heard last week James’ readers were going through some significant trials because they were Christians. What might some trials be for us as Christians in the UK in 2023? If there aren’t any trials why do you think this is?

3 | James goes on to write about the positive outcomes that can come from trials and temptations. As you read the passage again discuss what these are and the reality of when this has/ hasn’t happened in your own life when facing trials.

4 | Re-read James 1:13-15. James makes clear that God is not only un-temptable but God also never tempts anyone. Instead of blaming God, we need to look to God to transform our desire. How can we support one another to look to God in our temptations rather than let them overwhelm and overcome us?

5 | What is a trial or challenge you are facing that you could use as an opportunity for growth in your relationship/ reliance on God? How does that or could that shift in perspective change your approach?

6 | Take some time to pray for one another, particularly for the trails and temptations you may be facing at present.

As you work thorugh these questions pray for one another to deepen and develop your relationship with Jesus in this year ahead.
