BIBLE PASSAGES: Read online
Luke (Chapter 1, verses 1-4)
Psalm 119 (Verses 9-24)
EXCERPT:
Equality; Consent; Education for all; Science; Human Rights. They’re all things we take for granted. We presume they’re good things. But why? A look through History shows us that so many of our strongly-held values are not actually as universal as we might think. They come from somewhere. Like it or not, so many of them stem from the Bible – a book that has changed the world. And yet, it’s a book we so easily ignore or dismiss today. But what if there’s more to it than we ever realised, and it can still change our world today?
Bible Study Questions
We invite you to use the below questions to provoke discussion together out of the talk. Ideal if you are watching our Sunday Service online with others in your group, in other group settings, or simply using them on your own.
1 | One day, your friend says to you, ‘The bible’s just a fairytale isn’t it, which has been used to trampled people down?’ What would you say?
2 | Read Luke 1:1-4. What is Luke, the author, trying to tell us here? What clues does he give to why we might be able to trust what he says? How does this square with what your friends think of the bible?
3 | What is the relationship between accounts that ‘have been handed down’ by ‘eyewitnesses’ and ‘carefully investigating’ everything for yourself (v2-3)? Which carries more weight?
4 | Read Psalm 119:9-24. What, according to this Psalm, are some of the benefits of the bible? What might be some of the challenges?
5 | What does verse 18 look like in practice?
6 | A recent survey revealed that 40% of Christian teenagers say they never read the Bible. Reflecting on this, Tim Alford (National Director of Limitless, the youth & children’s movement within the Elim Pentecostal movement) said that, ‘If the Bible is undervalued and undermined, then everything deconstructs.’ In what ways is this true? How can we help each other to spend more time grappling with the Bible?
7 | Take some time to pray for yourself, and for others, that verse 18 would be true for us.
