‘BIBLE PASSAGES: Read online
2 Corinthians – Chapter 9, verses 6-8

Someone once said that you never meet an unhappy generous person. In contrast, when you think of Ebenezer Scrooge, you think of unhappiness and misery…all because he is uncharitable and demanding.

The bible describes generosity as, ‘God loves a cheerful giver.’ The original word used for ‘cheerful’ is actually closer to ‘hilarious’. What a beautiful image…someone laughing hysterically as they freely give generously. Isn’t that the kind of experiences we all want to have? How do we get there?

Each week there are TWO different sets of questions for you to use, whether you are exploring the Bible within your Life Group, in other group settings, or simply using them on your own.

These are simple questions to provoke discussion together out of the talk (ideal if you are watching our Sunday Service online with others in your group):

1 | Was there anything that particularly helped you during the talk?

2 | Was there anything that you didn’t necessarily agree with, or found difficult to understand in the talk?

3 | As a result of the talk, what:

3a. Changes do you want to see?

3b. Truths do you need to remember?

3c. Actions do you need to take?

These are questions that are based on the talk and the surrounding themes:

2 Corinthians – Chapter 9, verses 6-8

1 | Do you think generosity is enjoyable?

2 | Read 2 Corinthians 9:6-8. In his talk on Sunday, Nathanael highlighted that the phrase ‘cheerful’ giver (v7) is where we get our word ‘hilarious’ from. Generosity is to be done cheerfully, and makes us cheerful in the process! What is the difference between being a cheerful giver and a reluctant giver? (v7). Which word best describes you?

3 | What do you think it means to ‘sow sparingly and reap sparingly’, or to sow generously and reap generously’? (v6)

4 | What role does careful consideration play in generosity? (See v7)

5 | In his talk, Nathanael quoted Michael Horton, “In an economy of grace, there is enough to go around. The Father’s love and generosity are not scarce. His table is brimming with luxurious fare. That is why we invite those who cannot repay us. After all, it is not our table, but his.” What do you make of that quote?

6 | Read Luke 9:51-56 and Luke 10:25-37. Why is it so significant that Jesus faced opposition from Samaritans, and then proceeded to tell a story with the Samaritan as the hero? What is he trying to tell us?

7 | Why so generosity so difficult with people who we feel don’t deserve it? What does it say about how we see ourselves?

8 | Why does Zaccheus’ response to Jesus in Luke 19:8 so helpful capture what joyful generosity can look like?

9 | Take some time to pray. Ask God that he would help you to be a cheerful giver, in response to God’s amazing generosity to us.

As you explore these questions pray for one another to deepen and develop your relationship with Jesus.

Money Counts’ by Graham Beynon

Some of us want to escape money. Some of us want to embrace money. We fear money, and we desire it. We think about it every day, and yet often we try not to think about it. Graham Beynon shows us how to control our money rather than our money controlling us. In this readable, realistic book, he takes us to the gospel to show how we can handle money well in our hearts, so we can handle it confidently and wisely with our hands.
