BIBLE PASSAGES: Read online
James | Chapter 2 | Verses 14-26
What’s more important my faith or my works? C.S.Lewis once said “Regarding the debate about faith and works: It’s like asking which blade in a pair of scissors is most important. Throughout church history many have argued that James seems to teach in contradiction to Paul (Galatians 2:16) about faith and works but actually as we explore further we realise they are both saying the same wonderful truth. As we grow in our relationship with God we can’t help but demonstrate our faith in the ways we live our lives and the impact we make on those around us.
Bible Study Questions
Each week there are TWO different sets of questions for you to use, whether you are exploring the Bible within your Life Group, in other group settings, or simply using them on your own.
A | DISCUSSION STARTERS
These are simple questions to provoke discussion together out of the talk (ideal if you are watching our Sunday Service online with others in your group):
1 | Was there anything that particularly helped you during the talk?
2 | Was there anything that you didn’t necessarily agree with, or found difficult to understand in the talk?
3 | As a result of the talk, what:
a. Changes do you want to see?
b. Truths do you need to remember?
c. Actions do you need to take?
B | QUESTIONS TO EXPLORE
These are questions that are based on the talk and the surrounding themes:
Read James Chapter 2, verses 14-26
1 | Were there any points that stood out for you from the talk on Sunday? Was there anything you particularly agreed or disagreed with?
2 | S.Lewis once said ‘regarding the debate about faith and works: it’s like asking which blade in a pair of scissors is most important.’ What has your previous understanding abut faith and works been?
3 | What does “good works” mean to James?
4 | Why do you think James uses Abraham and Rahab as examples of faith and works faithfulness? How does his choice of these two characters speak into the culture of the day?
5 | Do you find it easier to demonstrate your faith through the words that you say or the deeds that you do?
6 | Take some time to pray for one another to be men and women whose lives would point others towards Jesus.
As you work thorugh these questions pray for one another to deepen and develop your relationship with Jesus in this year ahead.
