Mission Spotlight
As part of our ‘Riverside Story’ blog post series, this post will focus on a mission that Riverside is helping to facilitate here in Birmingham, the UK and around the world; supporting our vision to bring LIFE to every generation in every community. This month we are catching up with Riverside Performing Arts.

Riverside Performing Arts (RPA) is a Christian Theatre Company, which is also a part of Riverside Church. We go into primary and secondary schools around Birmingham and beyond with our shows – which embed a moral message, as a representation of Jesus’ love. Our secondary shows also come with workshops which we deliver to young people to get them thinking more about issues such as sex and relationships and mental health awareness, always with the underlying message that there is hope. We are currently working towards another secondary show, ‘Steamrolling the Planet’, with a focus on climate change, and looking after our planet. This closely aligns with God’s commission for us as his people to care for the planet he has made, and will also come with workshops and practical opportunities to practice our message with things like litter picking and junk modelling.

One of the key ways that we see the fruit in our mission is through our Re:Act events. Re:Act is a collection of drama workshops that we run for children in half term and over the summer, teaching drama techniques and working towards creating performances. Re:Act Xtra is the same but targeted at Secondary School age. Many of the young people that come to these events are not from a church background, and it is the first foot in the door for them to encounter Jesus through the love and acceptance we show them, in a creative and fun space. We are blown away by the number of young people who are now attending youth, or the kid’s weekend away who first got to know us through our Re:Act events, and then go on to be connected with church on Sundays, bringing their families along, or give their lives to Jesus. What an incredible way to create a fun and safe space to represent Jesus in a way that is engaging and accessible for those not from a church background.

We are continually blessed by the support of Riverside in a number of ways. Without having an office space, costume cupboard and the opportunity to use the hall as a rehearsal and workshop space, and overheads provided for, we simply would not be able to run. RPA is a core part of the identity of Riverside Church – it’s even spelled out in Riverside’s founding document! RPA has grown so big that we depend upon invoicing schools, receiving grant funding and regular financial and prayer support from a fantastic group of supporters. This all enables us to have a core staff team, create new shows each year and continue to go out into schools and churches at a price that is affordable to them. It is all crucial to bring the fruitfulness we see in the lives of the children and youth that we work with.
