A Riverside Story | Pineapple Youth Project

Mission Spotlight
As part of our ‘Riverside Story’ blog post series, this post will focus on a mission that Riverside is helping to facilitate here in Birmingham, the UK and around the world; supporting our vision to bring LIFE to every generation in every community. This month we are catching up with the Pineapple Youth Project (PYP).

Pineapple Youth Project is Riverside Church’s partnership with Ascension Church, Stirchley to run youth groups and activities for young people in Stirchley, south Birmingham.  We are an outworking of Riverside’s vision ‘to bring life to every generation in every community’.  The young people we work with come from many different backgrounds and for many, this is their only contact with church.

We run Youth Zone – a youth group for 11-14s.  We meet for fun games such as Xbox One, table tennis, table football, craft and creative workshops like baking and photography, as well as learning life skills like first aid and lots more. This term, alongside ‘Near Neighbours Birmingham’, we encouraged the young people to suggest improvements they would like to see in their local area; and we’re applying for a grant to put some of these ideas into action. It was great to see the young people looking to play their part in bringing life to their local community. These last few weeks have seen us having visits from the fantastic Riverside Performing Arts, and our weekend away to the Brecon Beacons.

As well as getting to know each other and build community, our aim is to see our young people grow spiritually. We’ve been running Youth Alpha ahead of the main YouthZone sessions, which is an opportunity to talk about some of the ‘big questions’ and allow the young people to explore faith. We also run Pineapple Rules Football; a term time football session for boys and girls aged 7-15.  Wind, rain or shine we take to Highbury Park on Mondays for an hour to play football, encourage one another and have a great time. It’s for everyone and all skill levels are welcome.

We rely on a fantastic team of volunteers from Riverside, Ascension Stirchley, local parents and of course, our fabulous ‘young leaders’ (YouthZoners who are role models and help run our sessions) as well as prayer support and funding from grants and individual donors.  Riverside supports us in many ways; prayer support, funding, volunteers and administration. All of which allows us to walk with these young people through whatever they face and show them something of Jesus’ love for them.

Get Involved …
